Patient Advocacy Resources for
Pancreatic Cancer Awareness Month

With the recent passing of the iconic and beloved Jeopardy host, Alex Trebek, we’re reminded perhaps even more this year of what a terrible disease pancreatic cancer is. November is Pancreatic Cancer Awareness Month and for good reason. Each year close to 60,000 Americans are diagnosed with pancreatic cancer, and while the death rate for many cancers has decreased over the years – this one has not.

Though the exact cause of pancreatic cancer has not been determined, we do know several factors that increase the risk of developing this disease. These factors include obesity and the use of tobacco products. The disease is also far more common in individuals who are 55+, male, and diabetic.

The diagnosis is frightening to patients, but as advocates you have knowledge and resources at your disposal to help support your patients through this devastating time.

First, ensure your patients that they’re not alone. In some instances, advocates and healthcare workers are the only support system our patients have. Make sure they know your name, your contact information, and that you’re there to provide information, guidance, and financial support resources to get them through their treatment.

Next, research your patient’s prescriptions. There are thousands of philanthropic aid programs available to cover some or all of the cost of these patient’s prescription oncology medications. Do the research, enroll your patients, and give them financial peace of mind.
