Patient Advocate: Courtney Wicker
Nurses hands holding patients close up

Disease/diagnosis: Renal Cell Carcinoma

Drug(s): Keytruda

Program(s): CancerCare

Cost covered: Keytruda copays and coinsurance

One of our advocates found a patient with a $2,100 balance for a Keytruda infusion through Atlas and was able to get him enrolled for a $10,000 renal cell cancer grant and submitted his claim. A couple of weeks later, he called with a question and mentioned he had to cancel his surgery to remove one of his kidneys because he did not have the funds to pay for gas.

Our advocate called CancerCare right away to ask about the status of his claim. The rep explained that because the patient's claim was retroactive, they couldn’t process it until a more recent claim was submitted. The advocate explained that the patient was skipping treatments because of challenges traveling to his appointments, asked if they could process his claim to help with his debts, and inquired about any travel assistance they offer.

She found that CancerCare had a travel grant and a general assistance grant that covers food, rent and office copays available for patients and conferenced in the patient to give him the information! He was able to make his appointment, and with the help of the grant, is now able to pay for his infusions. Our advocates are here with Atlas to make sure that no patient has to delay care because of financial hardship.
