Pushing Forward and Caring About Others

March 2023
Patient Advocate: Christopher Garman
Doctor comforting cancer patient

Disease/diagnosis: Multiple Myeloma

Drug(s): Revlimid

Program(s): Bristol Myers Squibb Patient Assistance Foundation Oncology Group 1

Cost covered: $7,500

Your concern for me showed within your voice and I am grateful for your support.

Our patient advocate was contacted about a patient needing assistance for Revlimid. She had already been receiving the medication and a foundation was covering its cost. Unfortunately, the foundation balance had run out and was currently closed. The price of Revlimid for a 28-day supply runs about $24,576 without insurance. The patient’s coverage was a $7,500 max with 5% after hitting the max. Her first payment without any assistance for once a month would be roughly $6,144. Once she met her $7,500 max for the year, the medication would still be $1,228 per month. Because the patient is on social security, she could not afford this medication. Our patient advocate could hear how upset and worried she was.

Our advocate worked diligently to submit the patient for the free drug program. The patient called our patient advocate a few times during the process, and it took about two weeks for the approval letter to finally arrive. The patient left our advocate the nicest message that he has ever received. She spoke of how much she appreciated him for doing this for her, and that she could tell that he really cared about her and the people he helped. This patient story inspired him to keep pushing forward, be even better and keep caring about others.
